Choosing a Glass Coffee Table

It may seem that picking out a glass coffee table isn't that complex a thing, but there are actually a lot of choices to make. It can be really surprising, the range of designs that a glass coffee table can take on. It can range from the most ultra-modern to just about any period that you can name. A glass coffee table can be really easy to match to your décor if you take the time to think about what you want match to it.

The Styles of a Glass Coffee Table

The glass coffee table is a relatively new invention, really having only come into its own since the 1970s with the availability of relatively cheap tempered glass. The tempered glass is an important part, as the tempering process imparts the strength, and is safer if breakage does occur. The fact that they came out during the 1970s gives glass coffee tables a certain stylistic reputation, immediately calling to mind funky chrome legs over a shag carpet. Over time, however, the styles have developed to a wide range of tastes, and even some very specialized situations.

Start by looking at the furniture that you currently have. This will give you a good idea of the style for your glass coffee table. Does your current furniture show a lot of finished wood? Then you would probably be happiest with one that has a wooden base. You can get a glass coffee table that hold your collections and displays them right in the middle of your living room, or you can pick something more sedate, that looks more like a typical wooden coffee table but with a glass protector over it.

If your current style is more modern, then you can still pick up a chrome and glass one, even if the seventies motif doesn't quite fit in. The range really is amazing, from simple legs to counter balanced pieces that look more like sculpture than furniture. There are, of course, times when the usual just won't do.

You may be very individual, and have a special hobby that really means a lot to you. In these cases, your imagination is the only limit. It is possible to find a glass coffee table with a wine rack under it. Or for the adventurous, there are those that have an engine block supporting the glass. The choices are endless, and you can surely find just the right glass coffee table for you.
